In a system with more player input, there's more room to balance the different types of Digimon, rather than needing to bias the system around specific mechanics. Also, Pendulum Progress' different stat types should make a comeback. Ideally, a new pet would strike a balance between raising sim and quest gameplay, like the PenX did. (An internal pendulum could even be used as the "button" to initiate Burst Mode.) I wouldn't want every Digimon to have or need a Burst Mode to win, but it's a mechanic that I like a lot. For example, certain fully evolved Digimon could be weaker at their base but have Burst Modes that make them stronger for certain rounds of combat. I'd like to see varied styles of gameplay within one device.
At the same time, I love the kinetic feedback of Pendulum shake systems, and incorporating that as a one-off pre-battle power up (or simply as a training method) would be fun without making you shake your elbow off. The fact that the infrared connection didn't need to be maintained constantly supports the idea that you could have an NFC-based battle system where you bump the pets together each round to exchange signals. Digimon could enter a panic state if too many attacks hit them that would prevent them from moving, but having good reflexes and being able to execute the necessary inputs to break out of it would cause your Digimon to perfectly dodge the next attack thrown at them. The Twin had an amazing use of infrared, connecting repeatedly for each round of combat, and relying on user button inputs to initiate attacks in real time. In terms of features I'd like to see, I definitely want a return to a skill-based battle system. Ideally, a new virtual pet would appeal to both halves of the current audience, with a Digimon lineup and shell design that wouldn't alienate any particular user. An actual children's toy at this stage would risk consumer confusion-you don't want to direct something at elementary kids when the rest of the franchise is designed to be bought up by young adults with large disposable income. is on the opposite end of the spectrum, catering first to the female audience. For Digimon, the video games and anime have both shifted towards catering to an adult audience, but different kinds Cyber Sleuth and n0 mainly appeal to male otaku in their 20s, while tri. I love the connector prongs, but Tamagotchi really has a good idea with their Near Field-based "bump" system where you just touch them to exchange signals. They've incorporated Webkinz-like online components, real world kiosks for on-site DLC, customizeable shells, and much more modern connection methods like NFC. The second are the $60 full-color Tamas that are more like actual video games on top of being virtual pets, with multiple areas to unlock, a lot of minigames, and more communication features. The first is traditional black-and-white Tamagotchis that incorporate some of the newer features but still retail for $15~20, and are marketed at young girls. I would say to start with the marketing strategy. The trouble for Digimon is that it fell off the wagon literally as Tamagotchi was making those huge leaps forward, and for a new pet you'd need to compress eight or nine years of evolution into the new release.

I think what Watanabe was really getting at was that you can't just update an old toy with newer tech and reasonably expect it to be something other than an expensive collector's item-to do what Tama did you have to create something that appeals to a modern consumer market with a new premise that matches the technology. 15th interview that they didn't want to do a color screen because then the price of the device would exceed 20k yen, but the Tamagotchi Plus, iD, P's, 4U, and U+ all did the color screen for under 6k.
